Preparing for your Rabbit

There are a number of things that you will need to know and get before you bring your new bunny or bunnies home.

I speak from experience when I say this, you will need to get the right food, enclosure, and lots of toys as bunnies need fun or they will chew everything out of boredom.

So let's start with your rabbit shopping list, and what to get before bringing your bunny home.

Rabbit shopping list:

  • Large enclosure and exercise run

  • Rabbit carrier Playpen (for indoor or outdoor use)

  • Food and water bowls Food (including hay, grass, and good quality rabbit pellets)

  • Litter tray and suitable bedding (straw or shredded paper)

  • Brush or comb

  • Toys e.g. treat balls

  • Tunnels or lookout platforms

Some rabbits can be very messy and recommend training them to use a litter tray if you want to bring them inside for playtime with you and your family.

Now that you have done your shopping let's talk about the ride home with your new bunny.

The journey home

This is an exciting time for both the rabbit and the family!

Prepare your carrier/cage for your bunny by adding a towel, some hay, pellets, and water especially if the ride home is expected to take some time.

You should also have a spare towel ready, as you can use it to safely catch and place your rabbit in the cage, then use it as a cover over the carrier/cage so the ride does not overwhelm it causing unnecessary stress.

Please don’t open the carrier in the car on your way home. Your rabbit may be scared during the journey, so it’s safer to wait until you are home and can put them in their hutch that is set up and ready for their arrival.

The safer the bunny feels the more it will become happier with you and your family. Now there is one more thing to think of when you have your bunny and that is insurance it can be quite beneficial for you and help save you money from an emergency vet visit.

Pet Insurance

The SPCA highly recommends buying pet insurance to cover the costs of unexpected illnesses or pet emergencies. Vet care can be expensive so they encourage all adopters to obtain suitable pet insurance to suit their needs and budget.

Currently, the only one covering rabbits is Petnsur you can shop around but there are only a few options on the market, and only one that I could find that will cover pet rabbits.

So that's all, for now, subscribe for more information as my next topics will be handling and companionship.

You can get a downloadable document of information from the Spca website.
